This aspect of research is undertaken predominantly
at the St Lucia facility although the Gatton facility also undertakes
experimentation on weed seed biology.
There are three main
directions within this research program
Tropical seed banks
Seed dormancy mechanisms
Seed kill
Research undertaken at the St Lucia campus is predominantly on the
dormancy mechanisms of native plants.
One of the main initiatives
within this aspect of our work is the use of smoke to stimulate
germination. This has important considerations in stimulating the
weeds to emerge at the one time whereby broadscale control measures can
then be implemented. We are currently developing projects to combine
this technology with weeds in areas of herbicide resistance.
